Background and Traits
An unusual breed, the Cao da Serra de Aires is being rediscovered and loved by many. It is a sheepdog from Portugal
with rare value. At present approximately 50 Caos live in Switzerland.
The Cao da Serra de Aires is a lively, intelligent dog. In Portugal it helps the shepherd to herd sheep, cattle,
pigs and horses. It is found in the Alentejo area from Tagus to the Algarve. It is exposed to both frosty
winters and hot summers. This agile, easily satisfied and joyful dog is an irreplaceable companion for the
shepherd. In his native country there are only a few Cao da Serra de Aires breeders. Since the population of
these extraordinary dogs is very small, breeding is now done with the upmost care. It is important to preserve
and nurture the most robust and classic elements of this breed.

In 1962, a male dog was imported into Switzerland and by 1976 three more Cao da Serra de Aires had arrived.
In the year 1978 one litter was produced. Up until 1995 not a single dog of this breed was registered in
Switzerland. In early 1995 we imported our first Cao bitch and in 1998 we were able to breed our first litter.
In the home the Cao is a happy and highly trainable companion. It is completely loyal to the family and is
always eager to please its master. Strangers are treated with suspicion and kept at bay without aggression;
therefore the Cao is also a good watchdog. This eager sheepdog has the appropriate temperament for dog related
sport activities, especially agility. Because it has a natural tendency for self- restraint, it needs clear
guidance without hardness during the training process. It is highly trainable, playful, and vital and has a
long endurance. In the house it behaves quietly and patiently. Outside, the Cao is active and happily goes on
long walks but never ventures too far from the group. The Cao da Serra de Aires develops slowly both physically
and emotionally. It needs about 2 to 3 years to reach full maturity.
